Bob Shad

American music producer and record label owner. Born: 12 February 1920 in New York City, New York, USA. Died: 13 March 1985 in Beverly Hills, California, USA (aged 65). Born Abraham Shadrinsky, Shad's career as a producer began with [l=Savoy Records] and [l=National Records (2)] in the 1940s. In 1951, he was named director of Artists and repertoire (A&R) at [l=Mercury Records], where he founded the [l=EmArcy] label. He produced, among other jazz musicians, [a=Charlie Parker], [a=Sarah Vaughan], [a=Maynard Ferguson], [url=http://www.discogs.com/artist/2664380-Clifford-Brown-and-Max-Roach]The Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet[/url], [a=Billy Eckstine], [a=Dinah Washington], & [a=Quincy Jones]. Other notable artists he worked with over the years include [a=Patti Page], [a=Vic Damone], [a=The Platters], [a=Lightnin' Hopkins], [a=Big Bill Broonzy], [a=Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee], [a=Janis Joplin] ([a=Big Brother & The Holding Company]), and [a=Ted Nugent] ([a=The Amboy Dukes]). Among his labels were [l=Time Records (3)], [l=Brent] Records, [l=Mainstream Records], and [l=Shad]. He also co-founded the labels [l=Sittin' In With] and [l=Jax (3)], with his brother [a=Morty Shad]. He died of a heart attack, and was buried in the Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. Father of [a=Tamara Shad], grandfather of [a=Judd Apatow] and [a=Mia Apatow], great grandfather of [a=Maude Apatow].
