Matthew Shipp

American pianist, born 7th December 1960 in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Playing piano since age of six. Studied at New England Conservatory of Music under [a542768]. He also cites lessons with [a1968223] as formative. Moved to New York in 1984 to launch music career. In 1988 Shipp recorded his first album as bandleader in a duo with [a309661]. Although most of his work is free jazz, Shipp has also performed in the classical and hip-hop genres.
