American alto saxophonist and flutist born Lexington, KY, May 28, 1914?, died 1999. Played on the riverboats during the 30's, with Earl Hines’ Orchestra in 1945, and substituted for Johnny Hodges in Duke Ellington’s Orchestra in 1947. Also was an instructor, and among his notable students were John Coltrane, Chad Evans, Gerald DeClue, Hammiet Blewett and his sons [a12355381] and [a7393701].
