Виктор Мержанов

15 August 1919 — 20 December 2012 Viktor Merzhanov or Victor Merjanov (1919–2012) was a Russian pianist and music educator, People's Artist of USSR (1990). He was born in Tambov to the Armenian family and studied at the [l=Moscow Conservatory] with [a=Samuil Feinberg] (piano) and [a=Alexander Goedicke] (organ), graduating cum laude in 1941 and receiving his PhD in 1947. After returning from the Second World War, Merzhanov achieved international recognition in 1945 when he shared the first prize with [a=Sviatoslav Richter] at the Third All-Soviet-Union Piano Competition in Moscow. Viktor became a soloist in [a=Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra] in 1946. Three years later, he placed tenth at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. During his 60-year stage career, Merzhanov gave over 2000 recitals in Russia, Europe, the United States, China, Africa and other countries. [a=Sergei Prokofiev] chose him to give a premiere performance of the Sixth Sonata in 1948. Since the 1950s, Viktor had been performing with [a=Avet Ter-Gabrielyan] and [a=Komitas Quartet].
