Robert M. Helmschrott

German composer and organist, born 23 August 1938 in Weilheim, Bavaria, German Empire. Professor at the Munich Academy of Music, where he was appointed President. He studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich before furthering his musical education with Pierre Froidebise (himself a pupil of Tournemire) at Liège in Belgium. He has been a serveral scholarships, one at the German Academy (Villa Massimo) in Rome from 1967-69; another, in 1975, at the Citè Internationale des Arts de Paris, and a final one as Artist-in-Residence at the McDowell Colony in Peterbourough, New Hampshire (USA) in 1993. Helmschrott writes sacred music, choral and chamber music. Much of his works is for organ. Helmschrott has been professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich and has been acting as its President and Rector from 1995 to 2003. In 1990 he was also awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany). Helmschrott is Doctor honoris causa of the National University of Music, Bukarest (Romania), 2003.
