Ann Sothern

American actress and singer who worked on stage, radio, film, and TV. Born 22 January 1909 in Valley City, North Dakota, USA. Died 15 March 2001 (aged 92) in Ketchum, Idaho, USA. She was married to actor [a=Robert Sterling (2)] from 1943 to 1949 (divorced). Mother of actress [a7098867]. Her mother was a concert singer, and her father an importer/exporter. She and her sisters were raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At the age of five, she began taking piano lessons. She later studied at McPhail School of Music, where her mother taught piano. She began accompanying her mother on her concert tours when her school schedule permitted. She sang with Artie Shaw and His Orchestra, among others. Her career spanned six decades and included 64 movies and 175 TV episodes. Sothern was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Tisha Doughty in her last film, The Whales of August (1987).
