54th Platoon

Hip-Hop group from New Orleans, consisting of blood relatives J.S. (Jochan Scott), Big Nut (Jackie Washington), T.L. (Tevin Ashley) and Nu Black (Thomas Valentine). Group members J.S. (Jochan Scott) and Big Nut (Jackie Washington) formed a group named [a=Face Forever] in the early 1990s, and after years of trying to get signed to a major record label, they decided to create their own label, Fearless Entertainment. Six years and two underground albums later, Face Forever evolved into the new moniker of 54th Platoon and now included the addition of two other cousins T.L. (Tevin Ashley) and Nu Black (Thomas Valentine). Inspired by the movie “GLORY,” which starred Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, the new name had a double meaning; Washington’s army of African American soldiers were known as the 54th Platoon, and the members of the group hail from New Orleans’ 9th Ward. 5 + 4 = 9.
