Elaine May
American actress, comedian, film director, playwright, and screenwriter. Born 21 April 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Best known her stand-up comedy with Mike Nichols, "Nichols and May". Their improvisational skills, and ability to come up with fresh material allowed them to impress their audience. Though their duo only lasted a couple of years, they were on the top quickly and when they dissolved their partnership. In writing, May is best known for writing screenplays for "Heaven Can Wait" (1978), contributing to "Tootsie" uncredited (1982), "The Birdcage" (1996), and "Primary Colors" (1998). She has received numerous awards, including a BAFTA Award, a Grammy Award, and a Tony Award. She was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 2013, and an Honorary Academy Award in 2022.
